How to Fix America: Tips from an Inexperienced College Kid

By Juliana Matthews on February 26, 2013

Republicans and Democrats boxingI’m not affiliated with a political party. That’s not true — I am. But my political agenda is not what I want to vocalize. There’s a time for that, and it’s not right now. Right now, harping on one’s political party — or cult, as I often view it — will only dig this country farther into the hole in which we already find ourselves.

Republicans blame the Democratic-run executive office and the Senate. Democrats are still blaming George W. Bush for the current state of the United States of America. Independents don’t make the news very often. And I can speak first-hand that many college-age students like myself don’t give two cents about who’s in charge and what laws are being enacted.

That saddens me. We’ve reached a point of apathy and non-bipartisanship. What got us here? Was it our desire for change — our desire to resist change? Was it our rapid increase of interest in online social media, halting our interest in the real world and our role to be played in it? Was it the thought that has been growing for decades that we as individuals — me, myself, and I — are much more important than society as a whole?

I don’t know the answer — I’m just an inexperienced college kid. I don’t care what caused this division within our country. All I know is that now is the time that we, as a nation, as a generation filled with passion and ideas, as a people dedicated to freedom and independence, must unite together to continue this life. We must each take a piece of responsibility in our current situation. We must each stop pointing the finger at members of the opposite party (especially those who have stopped leading our country years ago). We must each become engaged in the politics of our country and vow to join efforts with others in order to preserve the liberties and life we experience now. We are facing imminent threats to our economy, judicial rights, and centuries-old practices, and unless the present population commits to working together to fix these problems, the America we see today will not exist for my generation, our children, or our grandchildren. We must act now.
